When you look for a car rental in Belgrade, daily rates are easy to compare, but the difference between companies is rarely in the price per day. It's in everything paid on top: VAT, the deposit, insurance, fuel, mileage and delivery. This is a list of things worth checking before you book. We're a rental company ourselves, so for each point we also say how it works with us, so you can compare.
1. The total for your dates
Ask what the whole rental costs for your dates, with VAT and any extras you need. Two offers of "€24 a day" aren't the same if one excludes VAT and the other adds a compulsory airport fee.
With us, the whole rental is charged at the rate for its length. For example, a Citroën C3 for five days: 5 × €32 = €160, plus 20% VAT, €192 in total. You see the total before you send the booking, and every rate is on the price list.
2. What the insurance covers
Almost every company includes basic collision insurance. What matters is how much of a loss you pay yourself if something happens. With us it's 30% of the damage, and adding full insurance brings that down to a minimum.
Ask what the insurance doesn't cover, too. With most companies, ours included, that's the interior, tyres and wheels, the engine sump and a lost key.
3. How big the deposit is, and when you get it back
The deposit is paid at pickup and returned when you bring the car back on time and undamaged. Ask how much it is in advance, so the amount doesn't surprise you at the desk.
4. Fuel and mileage
The usual rule is full to full: a full tank at pickup and at return. If you bring the car back with less fuel, you pay for the fuel and a refuelling charge, which almost always costs more than the petrol station.
Short rentals often have a mileage limit. With us it's 150 km for a one-day rental and 150 km a day for two or three days, and long-term rentals include 5,000 km a month.
5. Where you pick up and return the car
If you're flying in, picking up at Nikola Tesla Airport is the most practical. Check whether there's a charge for it. With us, pickup and return at the airport are free, and we can also bring the car to an address in Belgrade, for a delivery price we agree after you book. We describe the whole process in car rental at Nikola Tesla Airport.
6. Driver requirements
The minimum age and years of driving differ from company to company. With us you need to be at least 21, with a licence held for at least a year, and an ID card or passport. It's all explained in car rental requirements in Serbia.
7. Cancellation and driving outside Serbia
Plans change, so check how late you can cancel free of charge. With us it's up to 24 hours before pickup.
If you plan to leave Serbia, ask about cross-border permission. Without it, a rental car may not leave the country.
Which car to choose
- For town, one or two people: a small hatchback such as the Citroën C3 or Renault Clio. Easy to park and the cheapest.
- For longer trips and more luggage: a compact or a saloon such as the Toyota Corolla or Škoda Octavia.
- For a family: an SUV such as the Škoda Karoq or Opel Frontera, for the space and the higher driving position.
- For a bigger group: a van such as the Renault Trafic or Mercedes Vito. We agree the van price by phone.
Most of our cars have an automatic gearbox, and they're all described in automatic car hire in Belgrade. On the vehicles page you can filter them by gearbox, fuel and body type.
